Our Healthy Holidays Baking class was sold out and a huge success. We kicked it off with this dairy and egg-free version of eggnog. Just a bonus recipe that I decided to mix up at the last minute, this was one of the most popular recipes we did!

I asked people which holiday treat is their favourite, and more than a few people said that it is eggnog, but that it does not love them back! Looking at the ingredients for commercially available ‘nog, I’m seeing skim milk powder, stabilizers and gums, cream and egg ‘products’… Not exactly whole-foods or easy to digest.

For those of you who could not make it, here is the recipe, adapted from a vegan Chef at radha eatery, where I headed up the kitchen a few years ago. Patricia Ganswind gets credit. I added turmeric to make it a bit more convincing yellow. I sometimes add a bit of fresh ginger too.

It also happens to go well with spiced rum. Recipe testing is hard work !

Hemp Nog

Ingredients

2 cups water or add your favourite home made nut milk

4 dates, pitted and soaked in water until soft

1 Banana (use frozen if you like this drink cold)

½ inch piece vanilla bean, or about 1-2 tsp good vanilla extract

3 tablespoons shelled hemp seeds

1/2 tsp turmeric

¼- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (fresh grated is best!)
Blend it!

Put everything in the blender and blend until very smooth. Use frozen bananas if you like it cold, or add ice cubes for a classic look.
